Alkaloids
nitrogen containing bases, mostly present in heterocyclic rings
produce striking physiological effects which vary greatly depending on the alkaloid:
- e.g. stimulation of the nervous system or paralysis; elevation or lowering of blood pressure, pain relievers, tranquilizers, antibiotics
e.g.s of alkaloids: morphine, strichnine, nicotine, quinine, ephedrine, caffeine. All end in -ine to indicate they are amines
Tropical forests have the largest numbers of alkaloid-producing plants.
