Outcrossing vs. Selfing
There seems to be a general consensus that outcrossing (breeding of two related but different genotypes) is desirable.
- Hybrid vigor e.g.. of cultivated plants
- Weakening of overly inbred organisms
However, the ability to reproduce via self pollination or asexually is also advantageous, especially in stationary organisms like plants, as allowing the creation of progeny when no pollinators are available.
