• Leaves pinnate or bipinnate, simple in a few genera

• Flowers regular to irregular

• Petals overlapping in bud with the upper petal innermost in bud

• Stamens 10 or fewer, distinct or connate

• Mostly tropical

• Cultivated members: Tamarind, Cassia (laxatives), ornamentals such as Delonix regia, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, dyes, timber
