Problems with the BSC (from a botanist’s point of view):

• Bisexuality and self-fertilization in plants

  • Are selfing plants “interbreeding’?

• Clonal species (vegetative or parthenogenetic reproduction)

  • Does one recognize each genotype as a species?

• Hybridization

  • Does one recognize groups that occasionally hybridize in limited areas as one species?

• The ability to hybridize (interbreed) is often a plesiomorphic character
