Volunteering

Volunteers bring their individual talents and expertise to a large biological collection, and are an invaluable resource. The Hortorium Herbarium has been very fortunate in having several dedicated volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours to the Herbarium's operation during the past several years.

A large herbarium has many routine tasks that must be performed regularly, but such work can be interesting and rewarding if done in good company.

Tasks that lend themselves well to volunteer assistance include:

  • mounting new specimens for the collection
  • filing specimens in the collection
  • sorting and curating specimens in the collection
  • preparing material for loans
  • computer entry of label data or other records

We request a commitment of several months, in one or two, 2- or 3-hour blocks per week. Herbarium staff can be available to help you throughout your volunteer period each week.
